Trip dates: To be determined.
Participation: min 6 – max 12 people
This is a group drive and ride trip – on day 1 we cycle 65 km into camp then on day 3 we cycle 50 km out from camp. Transport from Nairobi is included, however, if you wish to self drive then your supporter must drive your car to the lodge on day 1 and pick you up at end of day 3.
07:00 depart from Village Market Mall | 10:30 arrive Aberdares NP Mitubio Gate | 11:00 start cycling | 16:30 arrive Lodge.
Day 1: From Mitubio Gate we cycle off the mountain for an exhilarating descent of 650 m, we track around Mt. Kipipiri then northwards along the base of the Aberdare escarpment before ascending to Cedar Retreat at 2,850 m. Vehicle support is available if a) the weather turns foul or b) your legs cry foul …
Day 2: is a short and sharp 30 km circuit within the cedar forest, topping out in moorland at 3,300 m elevation. The solid climb to reach high altitude is well worth the scenery. Enjoy the afternoon relaxing in Cedar Retreat, or perhaps take a walk through the surrounding forest.
Day 3: Enjoy 22 km of descent to Lake Ol’ Bolossat at 2,300 m, where we will have an early lunch before driving back to Village Market Mall, arriving by 18:00.
Accompanying supporters are most welcome on this trip (however cyclists have priority if we reach room capacity). While you are huffing and puffing your way up and down the mountain there are numerous activities for them back at the lodge, from yoga above the water hole to birdwatching, hiking, and rock climbing, details can be found at the Cedar Retreat website, and note that some may need to be pre-arranged.
We will be cycling through Aberdare National Park so expect to encounter some wildlife. This is not cause for worry as we have comprehensive support from KWS rangers. KWS Park fees are not included in the registration; proof of Kenya residency is required to enjoy discounted rates.
The Aberdare Mountains are very cold at this time of year so you must bring rain gear and super warm clothes as temperatures range from 2 – 15℃.
